Timor-Leste National Eye Centre

Dili, Timor-Leste

We built Timor-Leste’s National Eye Centre with the generous support of The Fred Hollows Foundation Australia and the governments of New Zealand and Australia.

We work to strengthen local health systems so we can transfer the management of our clinics to local Ministries of Health. Timor-Leste is the first country where we successfully did this, and the National Eye Centre has been run by the local government since 2016.

Since the new clinic officially opened in 2011, the eye care team has provided over 80,000 consultations, dispensed approximately 30,000 spectacles and performed 5,500 surgeries.

In 2016, the National Eye Centre saw over 12,000 patients, of which over 700 received sight-saving surgeries.

In 2017, we launched a primary eye care training programme, with the intention that all general health practitioners in Timor-Leste will be trained to recognise and refer their patients for eye care services.
